As I'm sure many of you know, it takes a lot of time and effort to get good at something. You can sort of luck into it & there's some natural ability and the one hit wonders but with art and truly knowing it and where if fits in to the world's history of art it usually takes many years of in depth study of old masters before you can sort of begin to understand exactly why you make what you make and what it really means to produce it beyond the point of making pretty pictures and what makes it an art and what it really takes to master it.
I find it's really quite easy to pick up a camera, point it in the direction that i want it to take a photo and click the shutter; my learning curve has been steep and it fully immersive for 3 years where my camera has been my hand & my hand has been a camera so it wasn't long ago when I really wasn't all that good with a camera or taking photos; I thought i was at the time or more to the point I thought I wasn't too bad but that I needed to pick up my skills and practice a lot if i was going to start turning years of theory into physical form. I look back on those early photos now and although I don't see them all too differently, I certainly don't see them as quite as good as I did at the time but i see the same errors that i tried to iron out and know i've succeeded in getting rid of many of them & as it's been said a million times by a million photographers; your first 10,000 photos are your worst. I think that carries on strongly in any trade and any industry & I wouldn't expect a first time / first year makeup artist or hairdresser to create a masterpiece or someone that's just received their first cookbook to beat Jamie Oliver on their first time in the kitchen. Let alone do it every time from then on. So, I go easy on myself and I try not to give myself a hard time when I get something wrong or I can't quite get something right to how i want it to be even though i know it is possible, it's knowing that I don't quite know how to do that yet that keeps me going in many ways as it gives me another skill to pursue with my camera and creating great photos & art each time I click the shutter.
Speaking of art, you'll no doubt start seeing a shift in my style to incorporate other genres of art into it. Doing this isn't about changing my style, it's always been in my goals and objectives and it's really just a point of finally getting to a point where i'm capable of it and time finally marching on far enough.
I think as much as I love the styles of GQ and mens mags like playboy which i loved through my teens and early twenties or the fine art nudes that are always a classic like those of Patrick Demarchelier or Russell James and all the awesome fashion photos of the world to date that over time I've reached a point where in stead of thinking things like that no matter what you shoot, someone else has probably already shot it (which is so common to think) that in fact the reverse is true & with art there is so much more to do so, if all things go well and the more people that read and spend time on my website who also contribute financially to the creation of the art & I'm not talking big amounts; just regular pocket change then the greater the artwork can be. From hiring 2 or 50 models at a time to gaining access to a landmark or just buying more gear and being able to live comfortably creating for you without having to spend time sourcing clients. It's unorthodox but also seems intelligent when one considers that the more time spent working one's craft the better they become and in the past and the days of the old artists it just wasn't possible to crowd fund or source support this way, so, if you believe in me and value my works then a dollar or more here and there will help me to improve and will naturally be greatly appreciated.
